Children's Safety: A Right, Not a Luxury
In November, we celebrate the 2025 National Children's Month with the theme: “OSAEC-CSAEM Wakasan: Kaligtasan at Karapatan ng Bata, Ipaglaban!” This translates to "End Online Sexual Abuse and Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Materials (CSAEM): Fight for the Safety and Rights of Children!" This theme emphasizes the urgent need to end online sexual abuse and exploitation of children. In today’s digital age, where the internet plays a significant role in children’s lives, the risks of online abuse and exploitation are increasing. It highlights that protecting children’s rights is not just a moral obligation but a social responsibility.
The government plays a crucial role in ensuring the safety, dignity, and rights of children. Laws such as the “Anti-OSAEC Law” and the “Special Protection of Children Against Abuse, Exploitation, and Discrimination Act” have been enacted to strengthen systems that safeguard children from abuse, both online and offline. Agencies like the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), the Department of Education (DepEd), and the Philippine National Police (PNP) are collaborating to raise awareness, investigate cases, and provide rehabilitation for victims. These initiatives demonstrate that the government is taking steps to create a safer society for the youth.
While the government is making significant efforts to protect children, we must remain vigilant and do our part to keep them safe. The responsibility for children’s safety should not solely depend on laws and programs; it also relies on the care and awareness of the community. Parents, teachers, and citizens must come together to ensure that every child grows up in a safe and nurturing environment. Protecting children is a shared responsibility that requires constant effort and compassion from everyone.
